If you’ve been having trouble finding a sunscreen that you like enough to wear consistently, a clear sunscreen may be the answer. Yes, they exist!
These wonders of cosmetic science have clear or semitranslucent gel-like textures rather than the usual white cream or lotion situation. And thankfully, these still fit the usual requirements, including at least SPF 30 and protection against both UVA and UVA rays (meaning it has broad-spectrum protection).
One thing to note, however, is that these sunscreens all contain chemical sunscreen ingredients, such as avobenzone or homosalate. That’s understandable because these sunscreen ingredients tend to absorb into the skin more easily than mineral sunscreen ingredients (aka “physical blockers”), which are notorious for causing a white cast.
Chemical sunscreen ingredients work a little differently than mineral sunscreen ingredients, and unfortunately, they also tend to be more irritating. That doesn’t mean that those with sensitive skin can’t use a chemical sunscreen, but it does mean they should probably take some care when trying a new one out. So, if you have sensitive skin, it’s really worth patch-testing these products on your inner arm before using them on your entire face.
